As a group of candidates we strogly believe that the citizens voting for us should know what we will be working for in the coming years and how that is going to make our village better. We are committing ourselves to each and every one of these proposal and that we will be consulting as many of the people of Birżebbuġa as possible during their implementation.
These proposals are not just the fruit of internal discussion process but the result of a large number of discussions during house visits where we listened to your suggestions and your priorities. From there we have worked within our team to build these fifteen proposals comprising among others infrastructure, environment and how our Local Council should be run for the people of Birżebbuġa.
With the full participation of its residents and in collaboration with competent authorities, a network of verdant streets leading to and from different areas of Birżebbuġa, as well as open spaces and natural environments – such as the valleys and beaches that surround our village – can be established to enhance the beauty of the village. This can be achieved through small greening projects in various streets and corners of Birżebbuġa and the embellishment as well as the creation and beautification of open spaces.
This should position Birżebbuġa and its millenary history at the forefront of the Maltese tourist product.
We will put pressure on the authorities to ensure that the playing field next to the school is fixed and returned to the residents. As part of the project The Green Trail, the Local Council should create a playground for the children in this area and a garden for residents of all ages to meet, rest and socialise.
After the modernisation of the playground at Pretty Bay, it became clear that the equipment installed was not appropriate for all ages and abilities. Therefore, the area should be expanded and fitted with equipment that promotes the full development of children, including those with special needs.
Together with the nearby playing field which needs to be prioritised for refurbishment, this garden should be a valuable addition to the Green Trail. This site could be the centre of a project whereby it is enhanced in a way that complements the nearby historical sites and unique architecture. The garden would serve as a place of rest even for those strolling through the Green Trail.
We will create a live system that involves the participation of residents, businesses, and enterprises, in collaboration with responsible entities and with the help of European funds. The system will set up environmental targets, such as reducing noise, air and sea pollution, conserving water, improving traffic, and promoting sustainable development using modern technology. We will take measurements and offer incentives to encourage the participation of residents, businesses, and enterprises to take action in their everyday lives. Our goal is to make Birżebbuġa a leading locality in achieving environmental targets.
In order to promote elderly individuals to continue living within the community, we will collaborate with the relevant authorities to locate a suitable site for a night shelter in Birżebbuġa. This establishment will not only function as a night shelter but also as a day centre for the elderly.
After ensuring that basic services are offered in the new clinic, we will extend them to include programs targeted at education and prevention in the areas of personal and mental health care.
After conducting a study and creating a design, it is recommended to enhance the primary entrances of our village to increase their efficiency and safety especially where Tal-Papa Road meets the main road leading to the Freeport which has be scene of numerous accidents in recent years.
To address the growing parking issue in our village, particularly during summer, it is recommended to establish an additional car park in the former gas plant as part of any new development project on that site. This will help to provide more parking space for vehicles during summer.
Moreover, the first four parking spaces on every street leading to the sea front should be reserved for Birżebbuġa residents.
A number of bus shelters are needed, particularly in Qajjenza and Tal-Papa areas. These shelters should complement the much-needed change in the public service routes and frequencies. Prior consultation with residents in those areas is required.
We will be the voice of the residents and exert every possible influence to ensure that public lands, such as the former gas plant and the 31st March installation, are incorporated into the The Green Trail project. Development on these lands will be restricted to social and civic purposes only and will not involve any commercialisation.
In order to improve governance, transparency, and accountability, it is important for the Local Council to ensure that the residents are not only kept informed and consulted regularly, but also actively engaged in the decision-making process that affects them. This can be achieved through various channels, catering to different people, and a consultation schedule should be created based on the specific issues being addressed.
We will introduce a process whereby various services offered by the Local Council will be available on mobile phones, so that residents can easily report burnt street bulbs, request bulky refuse service, and request other services.
We will ensure that each area in our locality has a representation in the Council's work. This way, every area can have a voice in the decisions made, and the Council can better understand the issues faced by each area.
We will ensure that all voluntary groups in Birżebbuġa have access to a pool of experienced professionals who can help them achieve their objectives. This includes help with applying for schemes and accessing European funds.
We will collaborate with local sports groups to establish a summer sports school for the children of Birżebbuġa. The school will be coordinated by the Local Council and will offer children the opportunity to experience different sports that they can practice in Birżebbuġa itself.
